For the Love of Good Music

When people ask me what music I listen to, it really is a difficult question to answer. I listen to anything, really. But here I’ll say that I listen to good music. Of course, good music is different to different people. But to me, good music is practical wisdom. Music is life, therefore there is a background story to the track or album. And while making music should have a mindful approach, listening to it should be the same. With my lifelong love of listening to all types of music, I’ve realized that good music is a magnificent gift of the sentient experience. Its purpose is meant to teach and enliven the human spirit.

Regardless of genre and regardless of language and popularity, music is good music if it incorporates thought-provoking lyrics, sophisticated instrumentals, and aesthetically pleasing artwork, imagery, and symbolism. And of course, the musician knows how to rap or sing or play their guitar or piano. With all these elements involved, the music that is crafted leaves an impression on both the creator and the receiver.

Again, creating good music takes time and great effort, and is intended to leave a long-lasting emotional impact aside from just temporary entertainment. It’s more than just ear candy or created with technology. Depending on the genre, good music and good lyricism express what speech alone cannot convey.

Music is more than just a Spotify, Apple Music, Grammy, or Billboard experience. Since music is basically energy (and we are energy) listening to music should be an ethereal experience. Therefore when you listen to music, you should feel energized and uplifted.

Listening to good music makes a person sing or dance their heart out even if they can’t sing or dance. If the lyrics to a song are emotional or express a deeper meaning, it can even bring tears to the eyes and form goosebumps on the skin. Good music makes also what is unknown known. Good music is timeless. And to put it simply: good music is good music if it is played over and over again. Since I can easily feel the energy of music, it affects my state of mind. I will feel the beats, the excitement, the angst, and the overall effort put into the creation of it.

I am not Beethoven and I cannot compose music, but I do know that good music is meant to lift the earth’s vibration and leave an impression inside and outside the physical.  As Kendrick Lamar put it, music is all about “putting that organic feeling back in the game.” It must feel original, it has to sound original, and both the artist and listener must be original as well.

So to sum it up: good music is magical, powerful, and enriching. Music that is created with great detail and attention is meant to touch the hidden soul deep within. It is the most powerful magnet on earth that keeps us connected and alive.

So go ahead…

HAPPY LISTENING!
